Unit 4: Where We Are in Place and Time

The transdisciplinary theme, Where we are in place and time prepares the students to an inquiry into orientation in place and time, personal histories, homes and journeys, discoveries, explorations, and migration of humankind, the relationships between and the interconnectedness of individuals and civilizations, from local and global perspectives.

In this unit, Preschoolers will be looking at the Central Idea Personal histories allow us to reflect on and celebrate growth and change

The Lines of Inquiry are:

Important events that lead to change and Personal change from birth to present: self and family

As we dive deeper in the unit, they will understand Key Concepts:

  • Perspectives "What are the different points of view?"
  • Responsibility "What are our obligations?"
  • Change "How is it transforming?"
Preschoolers will also understand related concepts about beliefs, values and adaptation. They will continue developing their skills in thinking and researching and will work on becoming a risk-taker and open-minded.

Here are some ideas how you can help your child prepare for the unit at home:
  • Talk about your family history
  • Explain the reasons why your family or any members of your family moved from different places
  • Share some of your personal journeys
  • Share their personal milestones when they were growing up
  • and of course... how you, mom and dad met each other!

Happy Spring from the Perky Preschoolers!!

First Week in Preschool

The preschoolers started the school year with the Enrolment Party.  The students together with their parents come to school all dressed-up and ready to attend their frist day in Primary School.  They were entertained by the frist graders who did the short play about the School cone. Afterwhich, they received their school cone from the teacher. Together, the new preschoolers and Ms. Faye went to the vist their classroom and enjoyed their first read-a-loud!  They did their first day of school work! I WONDER..... Since the start of the all inquiry is asking questions,  we started the unit on 'How we organize ourselves' with a lot of provocations.  Through these provocations, the preschoolers started forming questions and we gathered them and added in our wonder wall.  "Why do policeman and fire fighters and ambulance work together eventhough they have their orn jobs? " "Why do kids have to go to school? " " Why do paople make books? " " As good ...

Our Family

Community is a place where people live together.  Our Family Our School Our Community The preschoolers identified themselves as an important member or these groups.  Roles are parts that everyone play. We have the Superheroes like Batman, Spiderman and other characters in movies.  But what are the things that they do? Those are their responsibilities. Just like us, we all have our responsibilities.  The Family Family is the smallest group in a community.  Some families are big. Some families are small. But they live together in the same house and do things together and take care of each other.   Using their puppets the preschoolers imagined and created a story of things that they did as a family. They had so much fun presenting in the class, changing their voices creating background sounds and simply telling their stories! We also played the Yes, No, Maybe corners where the students decided if they agreed or disagreed with the questions given to them about ...

Growth

This week we continue inquiring about our personal histories.  How much have we changed from when we were born to present. We posted the baby photos of all the preschoolers side by side with their current photos.  The students and teachers at school will guess, using the photos and looking for similarities who the preschoolers are.  We will then use these experiment to find out more about the concept of 'change' and 'development' in our unit.  We have also started collecting the pot flower that show the different milestones we have accomplished growing up.  They will talk about their personal stories to all the students in class.  We identified land and water forms and they realized that the water area is so much bigger than the land area!  As part of their history, we also have looked at the map and located the country they were born. From this, we looked at the bigger land area which is the continents that make up the land forms.  We identified ...
