Sorting Out

What should I do with the knowledge I have learned in this unit? As this unit on 'Personal Histories' is about to end, the preschoolers are sorting out all the information they have gathered.  They have organized their learning through the many works that they have done throughout the inquiry.  Next week, they will share with the everyone their PERSONAL HISTORIES in the story they are writing.  The different timelines they created will show the IMPORTANT EVENTS  that happened to them. These are also evidences of the  PERSONAL CHANGES that occurred from birth to present. The family tree that they created and the stories behind the different members of the family are also part of their stories and who they are.   Through this, we are hoping that they preschoolers will be able to understand that many factors affected their values, personalities and whatever they are right now.     Integrating Art competences in the unit, preschoolers c...

Family Tree

Family Tree The preschoolers have been busily working on their Family Tree as they continue to inquire about their personal histories. Researching and finding out more about your family's history helps the young learners establish their identity, embrace their cultures and traditions and understand who they are.  They learn about the past and feel a great connection to them as they gain knowledge about them.  It was also interesting to hear them identify their relatives from both sides of parents. They are starting to know these people by name which hopefully could lead to deeper curiosity and search for knowledge about them.  To add a little artistic touch into their presentations, the students were challenged to present the Family Tree not just only as a tree, but rather in a more creative and unique way!  See the great ideas they were able to come up with for their presentations.     "Sea my Family" Some students chose to present the membe...

Changes

"Why are all people different?" -Tamaki- I think that this is one of the most difficult question a child can ask.  Even I couldn't find the correct or the exact answers to this. However, 'Guess the Baby' experiment shows that we, somehow all look alike at some stage in our lives - when we are babies.  We looked at the strip of papers and the names written. We found out that a lot of the guesses where wrong and mixed up. We asked some teachers and students and they had a difficult time guessing the babies.  "They all look alike!" was the common response that we heard. But, if we look closely and pay attention, we can see that, the same baby is still there. So today, we have revealed the names of the babies!  Look at their photos... THEN and NOW Tamaki "The shape of the face looks the same."   Ciel Not one person guessed Ciel.  Well, Ciel didn't even recognize his own photo!  Koh "He still looks the same."  Daisy "Her smile and...

DEFINING HISTORY

Personal History "Making your own story" - Perky Preschool - SEE THINK WONDER As a provocation for our new unit on "personal histories allow us to reflect on and celebrate growth and change", we did a ' See Think Wonder' Thinking Routine activity.  In groups, the students looked at photos related to the unit and wrote down things that they see, what they thought and wonderings that they may have.  This thinking routine was then used as a springboard to unlock our unit vocabulary words such as: personal, history, events, and change.   TIMELINE The students also completed a simple timeline that shows the past, present and future. As we inquire further in the unit, they will be able to gain more detailed knowledge about their personal history.  NUMERACY / LITERACY This week we also started with our math and reading stations. During the different station activities, each group will get a chance to explore different  concepts and activities that will help strengt...
