Busy Bees

Here's a little tease, from the preschool busy bees. - Ms. Faye -  Sorting out stage is always fun! Students are thinking of ways to get things done.   As we will soon conclude our unit on living things it is also timely with the ending of spring. as they are seriously writing stories,  about bugs, snakes or ponies which all will be soon be highlighted  in their animal exhibit in the end. now enjoy seeing some teasers  of the wonderful works of the preschoolers   as their hardworking little hands work non-stop and always on demand. Thinking, creating and brainstorming are important part of their learning and we are all excited and thrilled to see the final outcome of their hard works fulfilled.

The circle of life

LIFE CYCLE round.. goes around and around.. never ends... repeats... -Perky Preschool- It is amazing how everyone (children and adults) gets hooked when talking about life. The depth and perspectives of the conversation vary between child and adult's but both agree on one thing - that life is full of wonder! Based on their questions, the students started researching informations about some of these wonderings: "Why do animals and other living things die?" - Leanna " Why do animals kill each other?" - Kai,  "Why do fish and sharks kill other small fishes?" - Mathieu Several prompts, videos, books and examples helped them gain an understanding about  FOOD CHAIN.  Together we came up with a the meaning. It is a process where organisms depend on each other for food.  It is when energy is transferred to other living things.  They discovered that a chain involves   Producers  who makes their own food.  Consumers    are organisms...

Taking Notice: Children's Observation Skills

'Unless someone like you  care a whole awful lot,  nothing is going to get better. It's not.' - The Lorax -  Dr. Seuss What an exciting week it has been!  As we move on to the Finding Out stage in our unit, the class chose the book 'The Lorax'  for our read-a-loud. They made 'connections' to our current unit and the students were inspired by the story.  I had to step back to let them continue on steering our class learning.  They inquired and talked about the word 'POLLUTION'. Questions came up:  Why is pollution happening? Why do some people only care about themselves? How can they let this happen? They drew and wrote down their thoughts about this topic to share to the school community.  UNIT OF INQUIRY Observation skills is not just simply 'looking' or just 'seeing' things, it can be very specific and children learn how to recognize the importance of things around them.  Noticing - a very important skill of a  researcher.  I...

Here comes the sun!

Here comes the sun, and I say, It's all right...  sun, sun, sun, here we come!  What is the best way to start Tuning In for our unit?   Well,  none other than going out for a walk to enjoy and see the lovely  sakura trees!!  We had our beautiful morning walk at Rokko Island and we were greeted by these blossoming sakura flowers around us.  We played our favorite 'I spy' game focusing on the different things we saw, heard and felt during our walk. While walking, passers-by couldn't help but laugh as they hear the contagious laughter of the Preschooler's as we explored the beautiful surroundings around our school. Back in school, we talked about the different things we saw during our morning walk. They worked with their group and together they wrote/drew the things they have seen.    Then, as a class we have sorted the groups into Living and Non Living Things.   They have defined living things as: .. things that grow .. they move .. ...
