Preschoolers are THINKERS


UNIT OF INQUIRY

Together, Perky Preschoolers came up with their own definition of a COMMUNITY and RESPONSIBILITY. 


In connection to our previous school tour, the Preschoolers are looking at the next community they belong to - SCHOOL. They have identified people they see at DSKI. They realised that they have a lot of questions and didn't really know who these people are and what their roles and responsibilities are in the school. 


They wonder......


Next week they will FIND OUT the answers to these questions by interviewing people in the school community. 

SPEAKERS;
Maria's dad Temir Rashidova, who is a CHEMICAL ENGINEER came to school and shared with the Preschoolers what he does. He explained that engineers help make a HAPPY PLANET and clean sky for everyone. 

 

 

Dr. Sayuri, Shun's mom also came to school today to share with the preschoolers her roles and responsibilities as a DOCTOR.

Why do you check people?
Why do you need to help each other in the hospital?

For the coming weeks, the Perky Preschoolers will be Finding Out about 2 important Community Helpers: POLICE and FIRE FIGHTERS.

LITERACY 
Story Elements: Character 
Preschoolers enjoyed listening to Goldilocks and the 3 Bears read-a-loud. In the story Goldilocks (person)  and the 3 bears (animals) were used to introduce the first Story Element, which is the character. Characters think, feel and move. Preschoolers described how the characters think, feel and move.

 

NUMERACY
Addition and Subtraction to 10
Preschoolers are continuously inquiring about the concept of addition and subtraction to 10. This week, they used bears to connect to their story, Goldilocks and the 3 Bears as counters. These concrete objects help them solve number problems.

    How I love this inquiry method!! The best way to study. It’s so wonderful that children can ask questions and come up with their ideas and they are taken seriously.
    What a wonderful definition of a community and responsibility)) that’s exactly the main idea of what I was going to present as a speaker. It’s great that children have already come up with it. Thanks a lot!
    It was nice to hear kids’ ideas on how to save our planet healthy and that some of them would like to be engineers, too.

    About the book - we have a traditional Russian story “Masha and the 3 bears” (Masha is the short name of Maria). To think, feel and move - amazing angle.

    p.s. about Russian family names.. our family doesn’t pay attention to it but in official documentation it is important: most Russian family names conjugate in gender (if a family member is female she has “a” letter at the end of the family name. So in our family: daddy - Rashidov, mum and daughter - Rashidova.

PRESCHOOLERS and their FAMILIES

  The FAMILY TREE helps the Preschoolers understand the relationship of each members of their family. This representation helps them understand the roles of the mother, father, sister, brother, grandmother, grandfather, aunt, uncle, and cousins play in their life history.  The Preschoolers continued to inquire about the personal histories of their family. They worked on their own Family Tree and have started SORTING OUT information that they have gathered from the interview with their parents, discussions and their own knowledge about the members of their family.          They have also made a visual representation of who lives in our home.  Before the Golden week, they did a series mapping exercise.  The place where they have lived or where they have travelled. Field Trip

FIELD TRIP Children who experience a holistic development during their younger school years grow up to become global citizens.  Taking the students out of the classroom  is important because it provides a balance between indoor and outdoor activities. It prepares them for what it is like in the real world.  As part of our unit on How The World Works which focuses on the science of living things, the preschoolers went out on a field trip to Rokkosan Pasture. In here, the students were immersed and had access to a different environment,  the farm habitat together with the animals who live there.  They experienced interactive learning by feeding and getting up close with these friendly and hungry goats. They observed how the animals shared space and played inside their homes.
