FAMILY SHIELD

Every member must SHIELD and PROTECT the family.

And as the child grows, certain values and beliefs within the family are what they use as an anchor in the process of development and change.

To gain more conceptual understanding of their personal history, they created a family shield also known as a "Coat of Arms" in collaboration with Art.

They thought about
a symbol...
an animal...
a word...
an activity

to represent their family.

Each child worked carefully, planning the colors, words and figures which showed their pride in their work that would represent their own family. Seeing the result, each shield gave us a snapshot of the values and the essence of each individual families

Evidently,  it is precious to these young learners to be the voice at school about their families.

Their eyes sparkled as they hold the beautiful, colorful piece of family shield.

They also started working on the Family Tree that will show the relationship of the different members of the family.

With the help of the parents, the students were able to visualize the people in the family over the generations and their relationships to one another.

Words such as parents, grandmother, grandfather, uncles, aunts, and cousins were understood through the visual Family Tree chart.

They looked at the other students Family Tree and they realized that families are different in size.

For IT integration, the students learned about the concept of 'change'.
Mr. Huber brought an old typewriter and gave the children an opportunity to type on it.

It was explained that the typewriter has the same purpose then as the computer nowadays. However, it was difficult to press the letters and users need to manually move the cursor to the next page.

Whereas now, the computers are very convenient and easy to use. You can take it anywhere because it is lighter and smaller.

Technology - a symbol of growth and change.

Night of the Student Led Conference

Preschoolers practice for their upcoming Student Led Conference (SLC) by engaging in mock sessions with peers and teachers. These practices help the students build confidence as they learn to talk about their artwork, classroom routines, and personal growth.  Using the checklist prompted by visuals like portfolios and photo displays, preschoolers explain their learning journey in simple, meaningful ways. Practicing ahead of the actual conference allows them to feel prepared and proud to share with their families.  It fosters communication skills, independence, and a strong sense of ownership over their learning — all foundational for future academic and social success. During the actual Student Led Conference, preschoolers experienced a range of emotions. Some felt nervous facing their parents, while others were visibly tired or overwhelmed by the attention.  A few needed gentle support to stay engaged. On the other hand, many confidently shared their work, explained clas...

Entering the world of imagination

Children use imagination to write poems and create artworks in wonderfully instinctive and unfiltered ways.  They are not constrained by thinking or grammar rules and truly believe simple things in life.  This kind of imaginative freedom allows them to create words and images that we might not even consider. They use personal experience and reimagine things. They write freely without filter and   mix real life with fantasy to create rich, expressive writing. They can use this form of writing to develop self-confidence and connections with themselves and others.  In Artwork, they use their creative imagination to create symbolic representation that we, as adults, could never have imagined.  Children represent the world how they feel it, not just how they see it.  Their artworks become a portal to an entirely new worlds. In this unit on  how we express ourselves,  preschoolers will be encouraged to use: Open-ended materials (like...
