Brave Firefighters

If fire catches, "Everyone run outside! Firefighters go inside!" The Firefighters! Truly one of the bravest community helpers. Inspiring young preschoolers about the importance of doing a responsibility - an action that makes a difference.  We are lucky that the Rokko Island Fire Station is just around the corner. The preschool students, teachers and some parent visited the station. They got to experience what firefighters do.    They got in the fire truck ad saw the most interesting tools and equipments inside it. An axe, mask, goggles, cutters, gloves, tank, these are just few of  their ( firefighters)  favorite things!   They wore a special coat that protects the firefighters from getting burned by fire. Picture Walk

Picture Walk As part of the FINDING OUT stage in the Inquiry Cycle, preschoolers asked questions and posted their wonderings in our Wondering Wall. These young readers used their different skills and initiated how to help themselves in finding answers to their inquiries. A strategy they learned is through a PICTURE WALK.  This strategy helps young learners develop reading skills. It involves looking at the pictures in a book to familiarize themselves with the information.  True enough, It builds interest and excitement to the preschoolers!  The activity encouraged students to be curious about important concepts and vocabulary that will help them later on as they start their research about community helpers. This also students develop SOCIAL SKILLS as they  communicated their ideas and without them realizing, made different connections such as: Text to text  a connection from another book, stories, movies, or songs they heard Text to self  a connection to their own knowledge or experien

Our Family

As Spider Man once said,  "With great power, comes great responsibility" We started our Tuning in with an understanding of a community is about. Together, we came up with a meaning of a community.  We then look into the smallest group in the community, the Family. The mother, father, brother, sister, baby. But we understood that each family is unique or different. There may be other different members in the family.    To come up with an understanding on how roles and responsibilities help organizations run smoothly, the students needed awareness of what the roles of each members are.  Then, the preschoolers looked at the many responsibilities of each members of the family. They thought about their own family and reflected the things that their mother, father, brother or sister, and including themselves, do in the house.  Using stick puppets, they created a story about, 'A day with my family'. Each one portrayed a significant role on that particular family activity.
