Self-expression

There are many ways for children to express themselves.
Ways to show their creativity and make their imaginations come alive.

This week, the Preschoolers looked back at the whole school year in Preschool.
We have listed down all the different events we have celebrated throughout the year at DSKI.
Enrolment Party, Oktoberfest, St. Martin, St. Nicolaus, Halloween Party, Christmas,  Easter, Book and Culture Week, STEM Week, Autumn and Spring Break, and more!

Some of these celebrations are also practiced in their own family. These are traditions that have been passed on from one family to the next.

Why are these traditions or celebrations important?
What are ways people express the importance of these traditions and celebrations?

1. Through Music and Movements

Music is important in every celebration.

Some people may find it difficult to express their emotions verbally. They use music and movement to express their feelings of happiness, excitement, anger, or even sadness.

1. Arts (shapes, symbols, patterns, colors)

Every line, shape, stroke in a drawing express meaning.
Symbols represent something else.
There's a hidden meaning that is connected to the symbol itself.

The preschoolers thought of a symbol that could represent PRESCHOOL for them.

Eimi
"Birthday cake"
Because we love to celebrate birthdays, Fun Fridays, popcorn party in Preschool!

Jae Hee
"Hand"
Because we use our hands a lot in Preschool.
We write, we work, we draw, we create things.
We use our hand to take care of each other.

Joe
"Crown"
We are special in Preschool.
We are rich with many ideas.

Michel
"Tree"
We have grown in Preschool.

Eda
"Unicorn"
Preschool is magical.
Preschoolers are fast.

3. Writing (Poetry)
From the colorful drawing, they wrote an Acrostic Poem to express their thoughts about what will remind them of Preschool. All ideas are different based on their experiences throughout the school year.

There are many ways of expression and whatever way it may be, the culture of respect, love for learning, resilience and believing that, 'we can do it' will always be instilled in them.

Hopefully it will be passed on for years to come at DSKI.

Night of the Student Led Conference

Preschoolers practice for their upcoming Student Led Conference (SLC) by engaging in mock sessions with peers and teachers. These practices help the students build confidence as they learn to talk about their artwork, classroom routines, and personal growth.  Using the checklist prompted by visuals like portfolios and photo displays, preschoolers explain their learning journey in simple, meaningful ways. Practicing ahead of the actual conference allows them to feel prepared and proud to share with their families.  It fosters communication skills, independence, and a strong sense of ownership over their learning — all foundational for future academic and social success. During the actual Student Led Conference, preschoolers experienced a range of emotions. Some felt nervous facing their parents, while others were visibly tired or overwhelmed by the attention.  A few needed gentle support to stay engaged. On the other hand, many confidently shared their work, explained clas...

Entering the world of imagination

Children use imagination to write poems and create artworks in wonderfully instinctive and unfiltered ways.  They are not constrained by thinking or grammar rules and truly believe simple things in life.  This kind of imaginative freedom allows them to create words and images that we might not even consider. They use personal experience and reimagine things. They write freely without filter and   mix real life with fantasy to create rich, expressive writing. They can use this form of writing to develop self-confidence and connections with themselves and others.  In Artwork, they use their creative imagination to create symbolic representation that we, as adults, could never have imagined.  Children represent the world how they feel it, not just how they see it.  Their artworks become a portal to an entirely new worlds. In this unit on  how we express ourselves,  preschoolers will be encouraged to use: Open-ended materials (like...
