" If teaching is to be effective with young children, it must assist them to advance on the way to independence."
- Maria Montessori-
A preschool story about being pushed out from their comfort zone (home) and learning about independence.
It started one afternoon, the 20th of April....
They walked back to school with their parent/s beside them.
Excited about the sleep over that's precious as a gem!
They entered the room with their parents to set up their beddings,
laid down the pillow, stuff toys, and books for the night readings.
Some performed a little crazy stunts, amusing laughter and loud shrieks,
Which I anticipated as a teacher, to be nervous coping techniques!
When setting up was done, we documented the night,
With a lovely group photo of me, the students and parents on site.
They said their goodnight, sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite.
Off they went and that's the start of change, that happened that night.
They helped prepare and set up the table for dinner,
and with the sight of the pizza.. how their eyes shimmered!
one bite, two bites, 4 slices, and then everything was gone!
Yes, what about, "I'm full!" - oh no, definitely there's none.
Then, we stepped to the yard to enjoy the warm, beautiful night.
Ran with their flashlights, and watched Mars shone its light.
Then, at about 8:30, some students realized what's about to happen,
They sat down, quiet, with the look of confusion and faces misshapen.
But, these little troopers with the help of this cheeky little teacher,
tried to deviate the thought of home, with the goal that now mattered.
Fun, growth, friendship, and Independence,
responsibility and courage they get from this learning experience.
Then, there was the day after the sleepless night,
They seemed different, proud that they made it through the night!
But I will remember the soft sobs, movements, and soft whisper of my name,
I experienced every hour of that night, and those staring eyes above me, of the ones who silently came!
It was beautiful, it was real!
The preschoolers did the deal.
They bravely conquered the night and I'm sure it was a pure delight.
Memories that they will remember for the rest of their DSKI life.
The wonderful DSKI Sleep Over!
