Start at the end

The END becomes the BEGINNING.. When we begin by TAKING ACTION. It started with sorting photos of things according to many different groups: transportation, animals, plants, materials, people, nature and things. It narrowed down to three groups:  plants, animals, and people, nature and transportation, materials, things  But as we identified what they all have in common, we called them:  the living and non-living things.  They knew that all living things need food, water, air and love.  Then, the challenge of making the compost box to make healthy soil for food was given to the preschoolers!  They courageously accepted it!    With the help of the Healthy Urban Gardening (HUG) Project Parent Volunteers, the students built the cardboard compost boxes.  They helped cut the cardboard boxes, put it together with tape, made 4 legs, lids,  and added peat moss and charcoal. They carried the boxes next to the planter ready for the othe...

Diversity at DSKI

Book and Culture Week The DSKI community has proven that we are all united as we celebrate this wonderful week of the Book and Culture Week.  The PTA organized a cooking session with Ayumi. All the students from Preschool to Grade 6 worked together in peeling, chopping, and slicing the vegetables.   The hot soup  gave warmth to our bodies and also to the hearts of the students and teachers at DSKI. Because it was a combined effort of all the teachers, students and the parents.    As they ate the hot miso soup, they gained an understanding of the importance of eating  healthy in the Japanese culture.  Different Games The parents have also prepared a space for the students to experience different games and toys from Japan and Korea.    In China, they go out on a parade with a lantern to celebrate the first full moon of the year. Sandi and Yan came to the class to teach the preschoolers how to make a rabbit lantern.  Hyunjeong and Jae Hee a...

Story Book

\ Narrating their own history in a form of a story,  is a way to keep it in their memory. It seems like yesterday when these amazing students joined my preschool class. I remember them - being nervous but excited to find out what primary school would be like.  Since then it has been an awesome school year with them.  They learned so much about themselves and were all brave to write about it.  As young writers, I remember how we started.... letters,  sounds,  stringing sounds,  phrases,  sentences, paragraphs... Now, a book. But this isn't JUST a book.  It is authentically theirs. It is a special book that tells about their journey from where they are now.  It tells about the memories, changes and growth.  It reveals their thoughts, dreams and successes.  It proves that they, who used to only care about milk, sleep or play have grown into marvellous independent young persons.  These stories are treasures. They are pric...

Why do we change?

"How did it get so late so soon?  It's night before it was afternoon.  December is here before its June.  My goodness how the time has flown.  How did it get so late so soon?" - Dr. Seuss -  How can we organize important memories in our life? What can we use to show our growth and development? Together, the preschoolers inquired what a TIMELINE is. They created a chronological representation of a period in time from birth to present.  They wrote down important events or a milestone in their life.  This activity gives a glimpse about the evidence of change.  This support the inquiry process by making the students celebrate growth. This timeline guided their thinking process as they began to write down the details of their Personal Stories.  The timeline also reflected their uniqueness and their values. They wrote about memorable or important places. Things they love. Simple accomplishments. And beautiful memories they were told or remembe...
