PICTURE WALK "We don't have to be readers, YET, to know and understand what's in the book. For now, we can use pictures and what we already know to get information." - Perky Preschool - As a starting point in the Perky Preschool's journey to becoming RESEARCHERS, they used unit books to help them learn about different roles and responsibilities of people in the community.  They did an activity called the Picture Walk.  Picture walks help the preschoolers connect the visual images in the book to their own experiences and activate prior knowledge. This sets the purposed for reading and they are able guess and get information about the topic and about what might be happening in the book. As they look, they make connections, set the purpose and comprehension is increased.  During this activity, the preschoolers talked about what, who, where, when, and why questions related to the pictures.    They talked. And yes, they do talk a lot!    And they learn from one anoth

DSKI Community

"It takes a whole village to raise a child." Our DSKI Community After learning that they did not know most of the people in the school community, the Preschoolers took the time to go around the campus to get to know these people.  They brought with them a very important TOOL to FIND OUT more about the roles and responsibilities of the people in the DSKI Community - QUESTIONS.    They asked the TEACHERS. "Why are you a teacher?" "What makes you important in the school?" They asked the PRINCIPAL. "Why do you clean the whole school?" "Do you like your job and why?" "Why do you work or help the school?" They asked the OFFICE people. "What is your work in the office?"    They asked the STUDENTS. "What are the responsibilities of students?" They asked the PARENTS. "How do you help the school?" Then we talked about the responses in class. They came up with a group of important people that make up the D

Why are there so many questions?

This used to be a simple preschool picture board, but now it is filled with questions that we all have stored.  everyday we discovered new things and explored,  the answers to our wonderings that can't be ignored. - Ms. Faye - Just like them, Ms. Faye also has wonderings. All together,  they helped Ms. Faye  find answers to her questions. Ms. Faye's Wondering No. 1 What are the many roles and responsibilities of the family members?  They worked with a group and talked about the people who are responsible for certain tasks at home.  They came up with different responses and it was evident that each student reflected, based on their own experiences and situations from home. Ms. Faye's Wondering No. 2 How and why might roles and responsibilities of each family member be different? They came up with the following reasons:   Safety - Is it going to be safe for the children to do the job? ex: cutting vegetables with a knife Age - Is the job something that kids can do or only mom

Family the heart of a community

"With great power comes great responsibilities."  - Spider Man UNIT OF INQUIRY (UOI) What are roles and responsibilities? This week is about FINDING OUT and understanding that everyone has many different ROLES or "HATS" to wear.  One is a child, a brother, a student, a friend, and a lot more depending on the hat he/she is wearing.  Along with the role comes the responsibilities.  But, what exactly is the difference between a ROLE and RESPONSIBILITIES? This photo explains the difference of the two.  Talking about hats, Ms. Faye gave each preschoolers their own colorful;  Reader's  and  Thinker's  (invisible) hats!  Family: The heart of the community A COMMUNITY is composed of people, places, trees, living and non-living things, buildings and different things working together. A FAMILY is a group of people living together in a house. They love and care for each other and do things together.  mama + papa = baby, brother or sister - Perky Preschool - The prescho
