Police Officer

A trip to the Police Station The students had the opportunity to step in the role of the Police Officers.  From riding the police motorbike,     To sitting on the police car. They even got the chance to use the speakers inside the cars. They found out that it is not easy to be a police officer and 'catch the bad guys'.  "How many times have your used the gun?" one preschooler asked. "I have not fired it on anyone." That is good to know. They showed us the tools they use to do their job.  A stick - to help them defend themselves against attackers. A handcuff - to restrain the person. Police officers are always busy. They have a lot of work inside the office too.  Thanks to these amazing police officers who keep our community safe always.

Step Inside

Understanding is more than just having the knowledge of the facts and information about a concept. It is far more deeper than that. It is stepping into the idea and be able to see, feel, ask, and know more about it.  Finding out more about roles and responsibilities of the members in the school community, they continued with their interview and conversations with the people in the school. They are beginning to understand that everyone in the school community are working together towards the same goal and all for the students.   Using the Visible Thinking Routine, Step Inside, they stepped inside the shoes of the 4 familiar community helpers: doctors, teacher, policeman, and fireman.  What do these people see?  What do these people think? What questions do they ask?  What are the feelings they have? This exercise gave the preschoolers an opportunity to understand and share their knowledge about these members of the community.  They started their in...

School

What is a school community?  It is the place where we learn many things about the world around us and make friends.    But, do we know the people in the DSKI school community?  How can we work together if we don't even know who they are, what they do, or where to find them if we need help?    The preschoolers looked at photos of some important members of the school community. They realized that did not know a lot of these people. They see them at school but do not know their names and what they do.    So we looked around the school to see the different people in our school community. We went to the classrooms, hallways, office and the yard to ensure that we will not miss anybody.    They grouped themselves and decided the person that they would like to interview.  With their groups, they practiced how to become good communicators by asking questions and patiently waiting for responses.  They started their interview and gathered...

Our Family

Community is a place where people live together.  Our Family Our School Our Community The preschoolers identified themselves as an important member or these groups.  Roles are parts that everyone play. We have the Superheroes like Batman, Spiderman and other characters in movies.  But what are the things that they do? Those are their responsibilities. Just like us, we all have our responsibilities.  The Family Family is the smallest group in a community.  Some families are big. Some families are small. But they live together in the same house and do things together and take care of each other.   Using their puppets the preschoolers imagined and created a story of things that they did as a family. They had so much fun presenting in the class, changing their voices creating background sounds and simply telling their stories! We also played the Yes, No, Maybe corners where the students decided if they agreed or disagreed with the questions given to them about ...
