A celebration of Book and Culture

BOOK AND CULTURE WEEK
March 7 -11, 2022

Differences and other cultures are meant to be celebrated,
it is a reflection of everyone's beautiful stories
and unique human spirit!
- Ms. Faye -

This week, the Preschool together with the whole DSKI community celebrated Book and Culture Week. This school event is an opportunity for the preschoolers to find out more about traditions and special events in connection to our year long unit on 'How we express ourselves'.

Cultural Booths
Cultural Booths were prepared by the parents in the hallway which gives students glimpses about different countries. Each booth was presented in in different forms to showcase each country's own unique cultures.

Bonjour!

Caroline came to classroom and shared a special tradition from France called 'La Chandeluer'.
A day dedicated eating crêpes!

As you may have guessed, all the students experienced flipping the crêpe!
Over the years, the reason for the celebration changes. But families still gather to celebrate this event together to enjoy, prepare and eat delicious crêpes!

This is the recipe shared by Caroline for everyone to enjoy at home! Merci!

David is one cool bananas!
He showed the Preschools, Grade 5/6 and G2 students how to play Australian Food Bingo!
But you shout DINGO! Yes, you read it right. Dingo is an ancient dog found in Australia.

He talked about food and animals from Australia.
Of course, it won't be complete without letting the students taste the famous Australian food spread - VEGEMITE!

This summaries some of the reaction of the preschoolers to Vegemite!

Spirit Week

the students came to school wearing their traditional clothes, silly hats, pyjamas, silly socks, and favorite character.

They expressed themselves in different artistic form through the different costumes they wore. Some of the students created their own costumes with their parents. They also showed their culture and explained the reason why people in their country wear the certain kind of clothes.

This opens up their minds to many different perspectives and international-mindedness.

Drop Everything And Read

"Hello kids! Drop everything and read!"

3:10 pm That is the time you will hear an announcement which makes everyone STOP whatever they are doing to pick up a book and read.

The whole DSKI was SILENT.

As they enjoy their time with a book on their hand.

It was a busy week for everyone at school but the happy energy was very contagious.

May this celebration bring the whole DSKI community together as we all strive for deeper understanding and respect of everyone's culture and differences.

Night of the Student Led Conference

Preschoolers practice for their upcoming Student Led Conference (SLC) by engaging in mock sessions with peers and teachers. These practices help the students build confidence as they learn to talk about their artwork, classroom routines, and personal growth.  Using the checklist prompted by visuals like portfolios and photo displays, preschoolers explain their learning journey in simple, meaningful ways. Practicing ahead of the actual conference allows them to feel prepared and proud to share with their families.  It fosters communication skills, independence, and a strong sense of ownership over their learning — all foundational for future academic and social success. During the actual Student Led Conference, preschoolers experienced a range of emotions. Some felt nervous facing their parents, while others were visibly tired or overwhelmed by the attention.  A few needed gentle support to stay engaged. On the other hand, many confidently shared their work, explained clas...

Summer

Have an amazing summer break to all!

A Day with Nature

From the moment we arrived at Rokkosan Pasteur, excitement was in the air.   The weather was perfect, the animals were curious, and of course the preschoolers couldn’t wait to explore! The highlight of the day? Meeting the  kids —not the classmates, but the adorable baby goats! The students were able to  feed, pet, and even cuddle the goats, horses, sheep . They were gentle and playful. Some preschoolers were a bit hesitant at first, but by the end of the visit, everyone was laughing and eagerly reaching out to connect with the animals. But this trip was about more than just the fun experience. The goal is to extend their learning about  animal care, natural habitat, and the effect of human to other iving things.  These experiences and observing how animals interact in a natural environment were learning in its most genuine form—engaging, memorable, and will have a long-lasting impact on their lives.    As the day came to an end, tired but happy p...
