PRESCHOOLERS are Readers

PATTERNS

Preschoolers looked at PATTERNS this week for Numeracy. However, they realised that Patterns can be seen everywhere. That led us to hunting for Patterns around the school.

We found patterns in NUMBERS

We found patterns in WORDS.

A short video of preschoolers talking and discussing how they should sort the words into patterns.

Finally, they made patterns using COLORS.

BOOK/PICTURE WALK

This is a shared reading activity that we do prior to reading a book. It is important that students understand the different parts of a book. Preschoolers learned the roles and responsibilities of authors and illustrators as they also prepared writing their informational book.

Book/Picture Walk activity sparks students' interest and curiosity as they look and point at photographs or illustrations in the book. This set a purpose for reading as they understand that pictures help them understand the story and they are able to make predictions about the story.

After the activity, Preschoolers reflected on how Book/Picture Walk helped them read.

It helps me remember things in the story.

It helps my thinking.

It helps me ask questions.

Pictures help me read.

If I don't know how to read but I can guess from the pictures.

I see pictures and I don't know, maybe I can read the words.

I can make predictions.

We also talked about strategies that Good READERS do.

Use pointer finger

Look/use pictures to help

Try to read words (c/a/t) - even if they make mistakes

Look with BIG EYES

Think

On Monday, Preschoolers will have their Community Helper Book Publishing. They will come to school wearing costume of their chosen community helper and they will read the book to the whole class. They have been practicing in class and are excited to present on Monday!

Night of the Student Led Conference

Preschoolers practice for their upcoming Student Led Conference (SLC) by engaging in mock sessions with peers and teachers. These practices help the students build confidence as they learn to talk about their artwork, classroom routines, and personal growth.  Using the checklist prompted by visuals like portfolios and photo displays, preschoolers explain their learning journey in simple, meaningful ways. Practicing ahead of the actual conference allows them to feel prepared and proud to share with their families.  It fosters communication skills, independence, and a strong sense of ownership over their learning — all foundational for future academic and social success. During the actual Student Led Conference, preschoolers experienced a range of emotions. Some felt nervous facing their parents, while others were visibly tired or overwhelmed by the attention.  A few needed gentle support to stay engaged. On the other hand, many confidently shared their work, explained clas...

Field Trip

FIELD TRIP Children who experience a holistic development during their younger school years grow up to become global citizens.  Taking the students out of the classroom  is important because it provides a balance between indoor and outdoor activities. It prepares them for what it is like in the real world.  As part of our unit on How The World Works which focuses on the science of living things, the preschoolers went out on a field trip to Rokkosan Pasture. In here, the students were immersed and had access to a different environment,  the farm habitat together with the animals who live there.  They experienced interactive learning by feeding and getting up close with these friendly and hungry goats. They observed how the animals shared space and played inside their homes. They were able to make connections on how they, as preschoolers socially interact with one another inside the classroom.   The parents who joined the trip also became the teachers a...
