Celebrating Growth

Sorting Out our Personal Histories by inquiring about the other members of our extended family.  As we learn about the people in our ancestry, we will discover what, where, who of how it led to the preschoolers. They will see their connection with these people as to who they are and later learn a bit of information about them.  They will also unravel some of the common traits and abilities they personally have. This might have been influenced not directly by their parents, but could also be from the other members of their family.  The students are encouraged to explore their creativity when creating a visual representation of their Family Tree.  A solar system, garden, fruit-bearing tree, or the sky - they were risk-takers and took different ways to express their originality.  They have also worked on a Venn Diagram to explore similarities and differences among themselves.  By asking questions to their partners, they were able to learn more about each other...

Importance of communication

Communicators express their ideas in various ways.  Through drawing, writing and speaking.  One of the ATL skills we are working on, is to enhance their communication skill.  We did different activities within the unit to explore ways on how preschoolers can develop communicating with others. They talked and encouraged other students to participate in the survey "Guess the Baby".    They worked with teams and collaborated with projects that need everyone's participation.  Decision making, compromising and dealing with conflicts are practices they are working on to ensure that they will successfully achieve their goal in the group.  These activities and experiences are all part of the inquiry process that will guide them to understand and celebrate growth and change!   As we are also preparing for the upcoming festivities in December,  the preschoolers created their Christmas Tree decoration. A snowman with their photo! They proudl...

Growth

This week we continue inquiring about our personal histories.  How much have we changed from when we were born to present. We posted the baby photos of all the preschoolers side by side with their current photos.  The students and teachers at school will guess, using the photos and looking for similarities who the preschoolers are.  We will then use these experiment to find out more about the concept of 'change' and 'development' in our unit.  We have also started collecting the pot flower that show the different milestones we have accomplished growing up.  They will talk about their personal stories to all the students in class.  We identified land and water forms and they realized that the water area is so much bigger than the land area!  As part of their history, we also have looked at the map and located the country they were born. From this, we looked at the bigger land area which is the continents that make up the land forms.  We identified ...

Timeline

Is it really important to know about our childhood?  That's a question that came up during our Tuning In Activity for our unit on Where we are in place and time. The preschoolers created their timeline from when they were born up to the present.  Ofcourse, they couldn't remember anything that happened when the were babies. However, something inside them told them that same as other babies, they drank milk, they stayed in a crib, enjoyed the time with mom and dad, and they ate baby food!  Each year, from 0-5 or 6, they wrote and drew one important event that happened to them. These may actually based on a child's imagination - which we truly encourage and support.  Now, it is our part as parents and adults to help them clarify and confirm these developmental milestones that they have perceived.  They enjoyed listening and looking at other students stories and they compared theirs from them.  They manifested interest in everyone's history.  One thing tha...
